Okamoto Shrine/Otaki Shrine

Okamoto Shrine/Otaki Shrine is located in the Imadate district of Echizen City, which is known as the home of Japanese paper. Echizen Washi has been produced for about 1500 years in the Echizen area which is a major production area of ​​Japanese paper. It is said that Kawakami Gozen who is the god enshrined here is the one who passed on the paper-making technique to the villagers. The main shrine and worship hall of Satomiya at Okamoto Shrine and Otaki Shrine were built in the Edo period, and are characterized by undulating roofs and delicate carvings, and have been designated as important cultural properties. Also, every year at Okamoto Shrine and Otaki Shrine, there is an annual spring festival called "God and Paper Festival" where the gods are welcomed to Satomiya. You can see the pushing and pulling of the mikoshi carrying the object of worship. The sight of the craftsmen who make paper on a daily basis carrying the mikoshi on their backs is a powerful sight to behold.
