Yanase Ryozo Paper Mill is a Japanese paper making studio that mainly produces wrapping paper and Japanese confectionery wrappers. They make Japanese paper using the delicate method of mold rakusui and also cute and colorful Japanese paper.
Ms. Kyoko Yanase, a third generation washi craftsman, is the proud head of her family's washi paper factory. Kyoko-san and her husband, Yasuhiro-san, will teach you about Japanese paper, how to make Japanese paper, and how to make a tapestry together. -
Tour Contents
When you come to Yanase Ryozo Paper Mill, the first thing you will do is visit the workshop. You will learn the basics of Japanese paper, such as the materials used to make Japanese paper, the process of making Japanese paper, and the what separates Echizen washi paper from the rest of Japan's. The Japanese paper making workshop is not normally open to the public, so it is a rare opportunity.
After that, you will be lent an apron and boots and actually make Japanese paper. In the experience, you will get to experience multiple techniques such as "sukikomi" and "rakusui".
While the washi paper is drying, have a look around the "RYOZO" shop next door. In addition to their own products, RYOZO also has a large selection of Japanese paper products from other studios in Imadate.
At the end of the experience, you can take home the washi paper you made. The texture of washi paper suits any room, not just Japanese-style rooms, so why not try displaying it in your home? -
