Highlights

The Kawada district of Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture has been producing Echizen lacquerware for over 1,500 years. More than 80% of the commercial lacquerware in Japan is said to be Echizen lacquerware. Echizen lacquerware is based on a division of labor, and each craftsman has a different job, such as a woodworker who makes the wooden base, a lacquerer who applies lacquer, and a maki-e artist who adds the details. In this experience, we will visit "Hacoa", which makes wooden goods, and "Shitsurindo", a long-established lacquerware shop with over 200 years of history, to see the world of Echizen lacquerware.

"Hacoa" is a wooden miscellaneous goods brand born from a company that produces Echizen lacquerware. Hacoa attracts many people with variety of high quality products made with reliable technology that has been inherited throughout its history and by using the full potential of the wood that it uses. There is a directly run store next to the factory we will be visiting where you can see various wooden goods unique to Hacoa, including wooden keyboards that shine with craftsmanship.
Shitsurindo was founded in1793 (5th year of Kansei) and is a long-established lacquerware store that has been involved in the lacquer industry for generations.Preserving traditional techniques,
without using any chemical paints Lacquer is carefully applied one by one using a brush.1500lasts for years As a manufacturer in the Echizen lacquerware production area,While handing down the craftsmanship of lacquer that has been handed down from our predecessors to the next generation, We are disseminating the culture of lacquer and bowls. -
Tour Contents

After meeting at Hacoa, we first visited their woodworking factory. While listening to the craftsman's explanation, you can watch them at their craft. You will be captivated by the sight of wooden blocks being shaped one by one by the hands of craftsmen as they become commercial products.
After seeing the craftsmen's handiwork, you get the opportunity to polish your own spoon. The way you polish your spoon will dictate the shape and texture which is one of the main charms of a handmade item.
Take a break after you finish polishing your spoon. You can also enjoy shopping at the company store next to the factory. After actually seeing the handiwork of the craftsmen and polishing a spoon yourself, you may be able to see the products from a different perspective than before the experience. After the experience at Hacoa, take your spoon and walk to Shitsurindo, which is a 5-minute walk away.

At Shitsurindo, you will first hear about Echizen lacquerware and about the company, and then visit the lacquerware studio. You will be taught about Echizen lacquerware while actually seeing the lacquer and tools in a workshop that is normally off limits.
After the tour of the workshop, you will experience wiping lacquer on the spoon that you had polished at Hacoa earlier. There are three colors of lacquer available to choose from: raw lacquer, black, and red. The color of the lacquer changes when it is being applied and when it dries. You will get to see this change during the experience as you try out wiping lacquer youself.
Lacquer takes a long time to dry, so after drying for a few days, the craftsman will apply the finish coating and ship it to your home at a later date. After the experience take a look at Shitsurindo's lacquerware at their attached shop. -
